Support routing

Where to Get Help With City Employee Portals

A practical support-routing guide for account access, HR inquiries, pay records, new employees and sponsored users.

An editorial guide, not the provider’s account service. We cannot access your card, move funds or receive a dispute. Never send this publication passwords or card details.

In this guide
  1. Technical access or sign-in
  2. Human Resources and Beacon
  3. Pay, direct deposit, tax and absence records
  4. New employee and sponsored-account questions
  5. A support note that is easier to route
  6. Official sources and limits

The right City contact depends on what failed. Use a Service/Help Desk for account sign-in, MFA, or an Access Boston application tile; use Beacon or the City HR Contact Center for an HR question; use the appropriate payroll or Treasury route for a paycheck or deposit record. The City describes Beacon as an HR portal and contact center, while Access Boston support handles account and application access.

Before calling or writing, name the system and the result you need. “I cannot receive the MFA code” is a sign-in issue; “my paycheck record is missing” is a pay-record issue. Routing it correctly can prevent an account ticket from sitting with the team that owns the wrong record.

Technical access or sign-in

For a password, account activation, MFA, browser-session or missing-tile problem, follow the City’s Access Boston Portal Help and your department’s current Service/Help Desk route. The City FAQ says some apps need approval and directs users to their Service/Help Desk when an application is missing. If the FAQ lists a particular email for an issue, verify that it is still current before contacting it.

Include the point where the process stopped, the device and browser, date and approximate time, and a short non-sensitive error description. Avoid passwords, MFA codes, recovery answers, Social Security numbers, pay statements and complete screenshots. A City support agent can ask for identity verification through an approved channel.

Human Resources and Beacon

For HR policy, employee information, a question about a City HR task, or an HR case, begin with Beacon. Boston.gov explains that Beacon includes an online HR portal and a Citywide HR Contact Center; it lists current opening hours and contact details on the live Human Resources page. Check that page before relying on hours copied into a third-party article.

The HR Contact Center is also different from technical account support. If you cannot sign in to reach Beacon, first describe the access problem to the Service/Help Desk; if you can reach the HR portal but the content or case is wrong, submit the HR question through Beacon or contact the HR team. The system comparison explains the distinction.

Pay, direct deposit, tax and absence records

For employee paycheck, direct-deposit, tax-form or absence details, check the relevant ESS record and the department that owns it. The City’s employee handbook routes questions about direct deposit to Treasury, while the BPS Office of HR describes ESS as the place for personal, financial and time-tracking information. Use the current handbook or official employee resource for the exact contact; a missing portal tile and a missing deposit are different issues.

If a pay record is incorrect or a deposit has not arrived, keep the inquiry within the City’s official employee channel. Do not send a bank account number or pay document to this publication. The independent editorial email is only for corrections or questions about this website.

New employee and sponsored-account questions

If an account has not activated or the welcome message never arrived, start with the hiring contact or HR team that handled onboarding, then use the department’s IT support for the portal step. If you are a sponsored user, contact your City sponsor about the request, expiration, and permitted resources. The public City FAQ says sponsorship and application access rules may differ across departments.

Do not create a second account or borrow another person’s credentials while waiting. For first-time setup, see the registration guide; for sponsored access, see the sponsored-account guide.

A support note that is easier to route

  • Name the system and the task you were trying to complete.
  • Say whether you reached the portal, passed MFA, and opened the application.
  • Give the date and approximate time and the device/browser, without attaching credentials.
  • Ask which group owns the next step: account support, app approval, HR, payroll or Treasury.

This structure preserves context without sending secrets. If the responder needs more information, ask them to provide the official secure method. The contact links on this site point to the publisher only; they are not City service addresses.

If you are still unsure, use the main Access Boston guide to identify the system first, then the system comparison to choose a route. This site explains public information but cannot contact City offices, verify an account or resolve an individual HR or payroll case.

Official sources and limits
